Deutsch: Diese Fotografie zeigt eine geöffnete künstliche Beatmungsmaschine, die allgemein als die Eiserne Lunge bekannt ist. In den 50-iger Jahren waren Polio-Patienten aufgrund der Lähmungen durch Polioviren zur Aufrechterhaltung der Atmung von diesen Geräten abhängig. Diese Eiserne Lunge wurde der 'CDC’s Global Health Odyssey' von der Familie des Polio-Patienten Mr. Barton Hebert aus Covington in Louisiana gespendet, der das Gerät von den späten 50-igern bis zu seinem Tod 2003 nutzte.
English: This photograph shows an opened artificial respirator commonly known as the iron lung. Polio patients of the 1950s depended on these devices to breathe after being paralyzed with this devastating virus. This iron lung was donated to the CDC’s Global Health Odyssey by the family of polio patient Mr. Barton Hebert of Covington, Louisiana, who’d used the device from the late 1950s until his death in 2003.
