This image is a version of a photograph of one side (the front side) of the 1947 Nobel Prize® Medal in Physics presented to Sir Edward Victor Appleton by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences on display at the University of Edinburgh. The Medal was on display in Appleton Tower, University of Edinburgh, where it was photographed by David Monniaux, who uploaded his digitized photograph to Wikipedia in 2005 and "deemed" it to be within "fair use" provisions of copyright laws at that time. It is a photograph of the "front side" of the medal that Appleton received, not the "back side," which is specific to the medals for Physics and Chemistry. (Please see the images posted in the Nobel Foundation website, which are all captioned "Registered trademark of the Nobel Foundation," for comparison.)"The Nobel Prize Medals and the Medal for the Prize in Economics" states: "The front side of the three "Swedish" medals (Physics and Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine, and Literature) is the same, featuring a portrait of Alfred Nobel and the years of his birth and death in Latin - NAT-MDCCC XXXIII OB-MDCCC XCVI. Alfred Nobel's face on the Peace medal and on the medal for the Economics Prize has different designs." "Further information" about the "back side" of the medal appears in the hyperlinked webpage about the "The Nobel Prize for Physics and Chemistry", where the image of that back side's design is featured: "The medal of The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences represents Nature in the form of a goddess resembling Isis, emerging from the clouds and holding in her arms a cornucopia. The veil which covers her cold and austere face is held up by the Genius of Science." The caption of the back side also states ""Registered trademark of the Nobel Foundation." The image uploaded by User:David.Monniaux and later edited for this version does not depict the back side of Appleton's medal.

This image is an edited photograph of the front side of a tridimensional object engraved and minted in 1947. As a "work for hire" commissioned by the Nobel Foundation in 1901 and completed in 1902, the object's original design (the original and still-current design of four of the five Nobel Prize® Medals [those presented as part of the Nobel Prizes in Chemistry, Physics, Literature, and Physiology or Medicine]) still appears to be the intellectual property (copyright) of its "author", the Nobel Foundation (Stockholm, Sweden), which commissioned its Nobel Prize Medals to be "modeled" by the sculptor and engraver Erik Lindberg and which acknowledges (credits) his work in its publications about these objects.
