This image of the valkyrie is far more active than the usual romantic period concepts of the type, that of a spirit who visits the battlefield of the Vikings to select only the bravest of the dead warriors for transport to Valhalla, the abode of the Gods. Norse myths do describe these spirits as armed and helmeted, however.
