Yes, I'm going to have a look on it. I know little Mandarin though I have learnt twice. In fact there are only few who speaks Mandarin in Hong Kong and Cantonese is predominant language there. There are many languages using Chinese characters in East Asia, just like many languages using Latin alphabets. One advantage of Chinese characters over Latin alphabets is that it carries meaning of its own. It does not mandate the pronounication of characters. For example, 話, in Mandarin it pronunciates huà, in Cantonese wa, in Japanese wa and hana. All means speak and its derivatives. [1] Yes, many Cantonese speaker knows the meaning of Chinese characters. But it does not means that Cantonese wikipedia is worthless. It is just like many Dutch speaks English fluently but Dutch wikipedia is still worth to set up. Cantonese is the mother tougue of 66 million people and spoken in Guangdong, Hong Kong, Macau and Chinese communities overseas. Piles of Cantonese publications, films and broadcasts were accumulated in a hundred year. You might read some popular Cantonese blogger [2][3][4][5]and see the differences between written Mandarin and Cantonese. Nowadays typical written Cantonese usually a mixture of Cantonese, classical Chinese, vernacular Chinese and sometimes English and Japanese. In mainland China, officially Cantonese is not a civilised language and should not be spoken and written. Many Chinese wikipedians hold this view towards Cantonese. If you are interested in listening Cantonese programmes, you might visit Radio Television Hong Kong. HenryLi 2006年9月26日 (二) 16:06 (UTC)
It's my late this time. ^_^ Priority to starting of Cantonese Wikipedia, there is some debates on whether it is romantic project or Chinese character one. In my opinion romantic will never succeed. In Hong Kong, there is virtually no-one writing Cantonese in romantic scripts. The vehicle of Cantonese is Chinese character. Cantonese people are not trained to use any romanisation scheme. Who can maintain a romantic wikipedia? Moreover, there are too many romanisation scheme for Cantonese. For example, foreigner use Yale scheme to learn Cantonese while Hong Kong Government using a incomplete scheme(without the distinction of aspired and unaspirated consonants, and tones) to romanise Cantonese names. Some try to imitate pinyin scheme of Putonghua. Wikipedian uses their own schemes would be disastrous to the project.
Cantonese language is lucky retaining a strong status in Hong Kong while there are a basket of policies inclining to elimate Cantonese (say education) from daily use in Guangdong(Canton/Kwungtung province), PRC. In the imperial days, there is no need to learn to Mandarin unless you want to be an official outside the province. (官話 means speech that spoken by officials.) Traditionally, the province (and Hong Kong) is located in the outermost ring of Chinese proper. It is used to absorb to foreign impacts to the heartland. Thus, Cantonese language is widely recorded in foreign documents, say kungfu, kowtow, yamcha and wonton. Many Cantonese people had to earned their living all round the world in 19th and 20th centuries like trans-America railways.
Most of Hong Kong people cannot speak Mandarin. It is only late 1990s starting teaching Mandarin in schools. The number of English speakers is much higher than that of Mandarin. Being at the gap of Communist and Nationalist Chinese, Hong Kong enjoyed freer style of life. Cantonese films and Cantopop became popular. You might hear that Bruce Lee and other popstars spoke Cantonese in their films.
By the way, I think Wei Hui can speak Wuu (吳語), another language in China.

Re: 周卫慧[編輯]

She might speak both Wuu and Mandarin in mainland China. I've translated the article from English wikipedia to Cantonese. See 周衛慧. HenryLi 2006年11月3日 (五) 11:42 (UTC)
